Competitive potential and factors for development of food, drink and tobacco industry in Bulgaria

Abstract: The article made an analysis and evaluation of the relative competitive advantages of the Bulgarian food, drink and tobacco industry based on indicators: labor productivity, wage adjusted labour productivity, efficiency and profitability, investment per employee and investment rate, in relation to the EU-27 average values. Comprehensive analysis of the factors for the development of the Bulgarian food, drink and tobacco industry includes: dynamics of purchasing power of households, dynamics of household consumption of main foods and beverages; development of raw material under the influence of factors arising from the accession of Bulgaria to the EU and the implementation of the policy and regulations in product markets; qualification level of the workforce; basic components and features of the business environment. SWOT analysis of the food industry - strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats is realized. Given the results of the food industry - SWOT analysis are outlined areas (mitigation of the raw materials problem; technological innovation, product innovation; sales and exports promotion; improving the business environment; human resources development), and measures to improve the conditions for accelerated development of food, drink and tobacco industry in Bulgaria.
