Strategic Directions for the Development of Bulgarian Agriculture

Abstract: The establishment of sustainable agricultural production requires carrying out of justified, in terms of the objectives and consistent in terms of the measures and activities, long term sector’s policy of development. Certainly, there is not eternal strategic policy – it should be timely updated, according the conditions changing and the potential of their rationalizing, but with a relatively stable character, allowing consistent activities, within a long period of time. From such point of view, in the article are analyzed the problems of the long term objectives of the agricultural policy, as well as its main directions. Based on the analysis of the agricultural development after the year 2000 in Bulgaria, the trends in world agriculture and the food system development, R. Popov. Middle term priorities of the agricultural policy in Bulgaria, Sofia, 2011) and a carried out SWOT analysis of the Bulgarian agriculture and the defined development requirements is justified the thesis that if the vision of the country’s development is the welfare of the citizens and their complete personal fulfillment, then the agricultural development objective should be the achievement of food safety of the population and the increase of the welfare of the producers, under sustainable production conditions,i.e. competitive and preserving the natural resources and environment. For to take advantage of the opening opportunities, concerning the
growing food products demand and the integration to the European agriculture, the Bulgarian agriculture should use its strengths, meanwhile overcoming its weaknesses and neutralize the emerging threads. The achievement of the defined objective requires facing the identified demands of development, which means in general terms to convent the potential of Bulgarian agriculture and the food processing sector through building of hit farms and companies, intensive and effective transfer of knowledge and innovations, exploiting more fully and sustainably the production factors (land, labor and capital)and the production of quality products of a high value added.
