Assessing competitiveness of unregistered farms

Abstract: This paper assesses the level of competitiveness of unregistered farms in Bulgaria in the conditions of EU CAP implementation. First, farm competitiveness is defined and a framework for its assessment presented. The later takes into account the production and the governance efficiency of individual farm; the farm’s potential for adaptation to market, institutional and natural environment; and the level of farm’s sustainability. Second, it analyzes the levels and factors of competitiveness of market-oriented unregistered farms in general and with different specialization type. Next, an analysis is made on diverse aspects of the farms competitiveness. Finally, adequacy of the suggested framework for evaluation of farms competitiveness is assessed. The study is based on a survey carried out in the summer of 2010 with managers of commercial unregistered farms of various specialization and all regions of the country.
