State and Opportunities for the Development of Vegetable Production in Bulgaria
Rumen Popov
Abstract: The production of vegetables is an agricultural sector, which had decreased its production considerably after 1989. This is a result of the country opening to new producers from different countries, but also of weaknesses of inside the sector, related to the production scale, the production and market specificities, the average yields etc. The producers of vegetables show insufficient knowledge about new technologies and innovative solutions, allowing production at new conditions. Despite this, the production in 2015 and 2016 show signs of revivification. This fact is also confirmed by the considerable diminution of the negative trade balance. In the next 5 years, there would be outlooks for a readiness of improving the production technology and the output realization. The forecasts for GDP and for the average annual inflation provide opportunities for increased consumption of vegetables, but this will also depend on consumers’ predisposition for change in behaviour. This article aim is to give a vision for the vegetable production up to 2022, through analysis of the sector and its development outlook.
